Marisa M.

Name: Marisa M.
Instrument: Horn in F
Grade: 12
Years in Band: 6

What do you enjoy most about being in band?
I like the community aspect of band. Every morning when I walk into school, I know I will have a section to go to. I love working a piece of music as close to perfection as possible, and listening to recordings to hear our progress.

Favorite Band Experience?
My favorite band memory was last year when we performed at the South Dakota Band Master’s convention. That was one of the best performances I have ever been a part of, and knowing that our audience was composed of music educators made the praise we received even more rewarding.

What other activities are you involved in?
I am an officer in HOSA, debate, and NHS

What advice do you have for younger band students?
If you don’t know something about your instrument or your music, don’t just sit out for the song. Ask your section leader! They would be happy to explain a fingering for a note, a music marking, or help you tune (you probably need it 😉

Tell us something about yourself that otherwise we wouldn’t know or guess.
I LOVE SEA OTTERS. Seriously, I’m obsessed with them. I’ve only seen them in person once at Monterey Bay Aquarium in California, but if you show me any pictures or videos of cute otters, I might hyperventilate.

What are your plans after graduation?
I hope to attend Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. I plan on a double major in Psychology and Neuroscience with the ultimate goal of becoming a genetic counselor.
