Frequently Asked Questions About 5th Grade Band

The Harrisburg School District offers band instruction beginning in the 5th grade. 5th grade band starts at the beginning of each school year (the first full week of school) and continues for the entire school year.

Each spring, 5th grade band teachers visit the 4th grade general music classrooms to demonstrate all the instruments of the band and give students an opportunity to try their top 2 or 3 choices. Helping students find an instrument that interests them is very important, but we also want to consider which one will be the best fit. Sometimes there are physical characteristics that should be considered. Combining interest with a well-matched instrument will help students be successful. The band teachers work closely with each student and their parents/guardians to help them make the choice that is right for them.

5th grade band meets during the regular school day (like all other specials, such as music, art, PE, etc.). Band meets 3 times per week for 30 minutes each time. The specific days and times vary from school to school.

This can vary from school to school and even teacher to teacher, but most classrooms have quiet reading or time to catch up on work while part of the class is at band.

In addition to group band (where all the instruments practice together) students are assigned one 15-minute band lesson each week. During band lessons, students receive personalized instruction on their instrument. Band lessons are designed for individual or small group instruction.

The Harrisburg school district rents FRENCH HORNS, BARITONES, and TUBAS for $25.00 a semester. Students and their parents/guardians are responsible for providing their own instrument if they choose to play the FLUTE, CLARINET, SAXOPHONE, TRUMPET, TROMBONE, or PERCUSSION.

Any student or family having difficulty meeting the financial obligations to participate due to economic hardship may submit a request to the business office for assistance. The Harrisburg School District will make every effort to aid all who wish to participate in band, the opportunity to do that without financial hardship.
