Jim Novak

Jim Novak is going into his third year serving as director of bands for South Middle School. Prior to teaching at Harrisburg, Mr. Novak taught 5-6 band at Tea, SD, 5-8 band in the Sioux Falls Catholic Schools, and 6-8 band at Goodrell Middle School in Des Moines, IA.

Mr. Novak is originally from Lincoln, Nebraska, and received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. During his time at UNL, Mr. Novak was the trumpet section leader of the Cornhusker Marching Band and performed with the Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, Jazz Band, and Big Red Express.

Outside of his teaching schedule, Mr. Novak serves as an adjudicator for local solo/ensemble contests. Mr. Novak has performed with the Sioux Empire Brass Society, the Des Moines Metro Opera, the Des Moines Municipal Band, the Greater Des Moines Community Band, and the CJC Big Band.

Mr. Novak’s professional affiliations include NAfME (The National Association for Music Education), South Dakota Bandmasters, South Dakota Music Educators Association, & The National Education Association.

Mr. Novak lives in Sioux Falls with his wife, Erin, and his children, Jay and Nora.
